Women Philanthropists In History
With many of life's basic issues we look to the Bible for examples and instruction. Here, particularly in the New Testament, we find a number of women who willingly give of
themselves, their talent and their possessions for the benefit of others. They were irrepressible and it seemed always to be as a response to the love, acceptance and redemption given them by
Jesus Christ. They lived in a society which threatened their lives for their beliefs, but they didn't seem to care and were interested in the benefit of all people.
Greek and Roman
women, however, were not allowed to own property, were not integrated into the male culture and did not have access to learning. They had no interest in others. Similarly, Jewish women may
have engaged in philanthropy toward their own people, but made so little long-lasting impact that there is no mention of them in either ancient sacred or secular writings.
From this
we see that Christian women have led the way in stewardship of their time, talent and resources with lasting impact on the world.
