Going Beyond Giving Well
In evangelical circles, all wealth is acknowledged to belong to God. Where did the idea come from that God was, therefore, only interested in that portion, however great or small,
that we give back to Him? God's people are provided with intellect and opportunity to use all of His resources well, but fear of the future and greed sometimes govern their management.
Certainly God is as interested in how the principal is invested as He is in how the income is distributed. God's people should be diligent to invest only in those entities who have
responsible, Christian-like morals and ethics.
Another way of making investments is to find unusual opportunities to make a difference in the lives of people. In this day of multiple
disasters, it is more evident than ever that the Great Commission message can only be received by thousands of unfortunate and lost people if we first show them compassion by meeting some of
their physical needs. How receptive is a homeless, widowed mother to the presentation of the Gospel unless it is accompanied by warm clothing for her children and some food? This demonstrated
love and affirmation that she and her family are important to us and to God provides credibility for both the message and the messenger.
No one should miss the blessing of personally
loving those with whom Jesus identified most closely. They can teach us much about true faith in God. Their spirit of overcoming true challenges can free those of us choked by modern
trivialities, reminding us of how blessed we are.
Christian stewardship is all about God's love for me and therefore my love for my neighbor. It is easier to just give money to good,
even Christian, causes. Jesus never promised that true stewardship would be easy, but that it would be worth it for all eternity when we are judged as faithful and graceful stewards rather
than as partial donors.
